| 2007 Toyota Highlander: New side airbags now standard safety equipment TORONTO, Aug. 31 /CNW/ - The 2007 Toyota Highlander is the vehicle of choice for anyone who wants SUV space, functionality and driving confidence without sacrificing the style, handling and comfort of a premium sedan. Now, with front seat mounted side airbags and roll-sensing front and rear head/side curtain airbags standard on every Highlander sold in Canada, it also protects occupants better than ever before. The conventionally-powered, four-wheel-drive Highlander is sold in two very well-equipped versions: "Highlander is one of the most versatile vehicles on the road, combining a roomy, comfortable cabin, a refined ride, and the all-weather confidence of a four-wheel drive," said Tony Wearing, Managing Director of Toyota Canada Inc. "With the addition of side airbags as standard equipment across the lineup, we've made it even safer for owners to enjoy their Highlanders." As always, great value is also standard equipment. The 5-passenger 4WD V6 Highlander starts at $38,470. The 7-passenger 4WD V6 Highlander starts at $39,520. 2007 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER - PRODUCT DETAIL --------------------------------------- DRIVETRAIN ---------- The 4WD V6 Highlander, in both 5- and 7-passenger configurations, is equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder that produces 215 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 222 lb/ft of torque at 3,600 rpm. In fact, the 3MZ-FE-equipped Highlander is so efficient, thanks to its efficient design and Toyota's Variable Valve Timing-intelligent VVT-i) technology. Continuously variable VVT-i optimizes tuning characteristics based on engine speed and load, resulting in improved responsiveness, power, torque and fuel efficiency as well as reduced emissions. For a sport utility vehicle, the V6 Highlander is one of the most fuel-efficient in its class, with 12.7 L/100 km in the city and 9.0 L/100 km on highway. Harnessing the V6 power is a 5-speed automatic ECT (Electronically-Controlled Transmission). ECT allows the Engine Control Module to manage shift decisions based on engine speed and load, so that every shift is precise and seamless. It also monitors throttle position, road speed, power requirements and operating temperature to efficiently direct gear selection and adjust shift points to driving demands. REFINED, CONFIDENT HANDLING --------------------------- Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system, including Traction Control (TRAC), is standard across the lineup. Using a yaw sensor in conjunction with the ABS and TRAC systems, VSC enhances cornering stability, using both throttle intervention and brakes to correct oversteer and understeer. Engine speed-sensing rack-and-pinion steering with variable power assist is standard equipment, as are all-season P225/70R16 radial tires and a full-sized spare tire. Highlander's fully independent suspension uses front MacPherson gas struts and an anti-vibration subframe, plus coil springs with gas shock absorbers and stabilizer bar. The front shock absorbers also have built-in linear control valves and rebound springs for enhanced maneuverability and stable cornering performance. Braking is provided by power-assisted, ventilated discs in front and solid discs in the rear. An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is standard, enhanced with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. EBD adjusts for minute front to rear speed differences to prevent wheel lockup. Brake Assist interprets a fast application of the brake pedal as emergency braking and unobtrusively exerts additional brake pressure for short, controlled stops. Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) are reduced with sound absorbing and vibration damping materials that isolate engine and road noise. An Active Control Engine Mount cancels out engine vibration during idle. WELL-EQUIPPED TO GO ANYWHERE ---------------------------- The Leather Package, which may be fitted to both the 5-passenger and 7- passenger Highlanders, includes: SENSIBLE SAFETY --------------- Highlander's rigid, lightweight unibody structure provides responsive driving performance and exceptional occupant protection. Front seat mounted side airbags and roll-sensing front and rear head/side curtain airbags are now standard across the Highlander lineup, as are dual front Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbags. Highlander is equipped with an Occupant Classification Sensor for the front passenger seat that deactivates the front passenger airbag for occupants who weigh less than about 70 pounds. Three-point seatbelts for all passengers and are standard. Driver and front passenger seats are equipped with seatbelt pre-tensioners and force limiters. There are two locations for Child Restraint Seats. Acclaimed levels of passive safety are provided by an impact-absorbing body that helps disperse frontal and side impact forces before they reach occupants, and a high-strength structure that minimizes cabin deformation. A head impact structure designed into the roof pillars and rails helps reduce head injury in the event of a collision. Highlander is equipped with Toyota's no deductible, no transfer fee, comprehensive warranty that covers the entire vehicle for 3 years/60,000 kilometres. Power train components are covered for 5 years/100,000 kilometres, major emission control components for 8 years/130,000 kilometres and corrosion perforation for five years with unlimited distance. Toyota also provides 24-hour Roadside Assistance for all models; help is just a phone call away at 1-888-TOYOTA-8. Roadside emergency services include battery boost, lockout service, fuel delivery, tire change, winching, and even towing. Optional Extended Care Protection (ECP) is also available, which includes travel planning and trip interruption assistance, vehicle rental help, lubrication maintenance, and mechanical protection of 17 major mechanical component groups for up to 6 years/200,000 km. The purchase of a new Toyota also includes a free membership in Club Toyota, an on-line service designed for customer convenience, placing vehicle ownership information at the customer's fingertips.
